New Domat training courses: MQTT and BACnet

We are expanding our Domat training programme with two new courses focused on communication. In the Introduction to MQTT course, you will learn how to connect IoT devices with PLCs and visualisations. The Communication via BACnet course guides you through the standard that is the first choice for system integration at the automation level. Both courses are short, hands-on and built around working in Domat IDE. You will leave not just with theory, but with a working, tested communication setup.

Introduction to MQTT
MQTT is becoming an increasingly popular way to integrate IoT devices (and more) into the world of PLCs and visualisations. Domat IDE has supported it since version 2.8, so this course goes beyond theory. In a few hours, you will set up the protocol parameters in Domat IDE and try publishing and reading data on a test broker.

Programme:

Basic features of MQTT and terminology
Publisher, subscriber and broker roles
A test broker and exploring it with a client
Topics and message formats
Quality of Service, Will message, Retain and their implementation in IDE
Composing and parsing messages, implementation in IDE
Basics of regular expressions
Programming a communication channel in Domat IDE and connecting to the broker
Possible problems and how to solve them
What to bring: your own laptop with administrator access to Windows. During the course, you will install Domat IDE, Wireshark and MQTT Explorer.

Communication via BACnet
This full-day course (9:00–15:00) for programmers and system integrators introduces the basics of the BACnet protocol. As a standardised protocol, BACnet is the first choice for system integration at the automation level. You will go through the principles of communication, objects and their properties, and setting up a BACnet server and client in Domat IDE. In the practical part, you will explore the server with a generic client and analyse the communication in Wireshark.

Programme:

BACnet objects and properties
BACnet services (Who-Is, Who-Has…)
Reading and writing objects from the server
Write priorities
Troubleshooting communication
UDP / MS/TP routing
Functional profiles and working with them
Import and export using EDE files
BACnet SC
What to bring: your own laptop with an Ethernet port and your favourite PLC and SCADA software (BACnet clients). You need administrator access to Windows to install Wireshark and YABE. Set your laptop’s IP address in the 192.168.1.x range in advance. If you have your own BACnet server (PLC, controller, meter…), bring it along – it will make the session more interesting.
